What is the easiest way to get a grant to write a book?

how to write grants

I am a female minority and I am in the process of writing a self-help educational book and I was wondering if anyone had any advice on where I should begin to look for grant money to help me with this process.

  2. Tony Said,

There are tons of grants out there for you, but , everybody knows it and are after them also. A lot of Authors support themselves this way. That’s why there are a lot of contests or guidelines for them. First you can go straight to a Web-site like: and see what they have to offer (there are many). Secondly, grants come in many shapes and sizes and a lot of them have certain criteria that have to be met, for instance: some are just for teenagers, some for particular genres and some depend on the region you live in. It’s up to you to find the one that best suites you. Here are some places you can try: ‘poets and writers’ at and finally one of the best contest sites (They weed out the bad contests for you). It’s all about the research. Some (like contests) need the finished manuscript, but there might be some ( you have to find then though) that might just need an overview and a few sample chapters. Another writing site you can try is: wwwfreelancewriting.com and remember its in the research. Good Luck!

The government does not give grants to writers writing sci-fi books. If your book is about improving humanities then you JUST MIGHT be able to get a grant

Why don’t you shop your book around to see if any publishers would give you an advance?

You can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) and Grants.gov – these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support your purposes. Once you find a grant where you can qualify, apply for it at Grants.gov

Even if you buy books on “how to get grants” or list that supposedly has information on grants — all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently.

Note though that these grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments. Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT – Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program. Individuals especially for personal purposes are not eligible for federal grants.

Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women’s Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women’s business center that will train women entrepreneurs
