What’s red and hot and throbs with promise?

The boring answer to this age-old riddle is, of course, a red sports car with one of those mufflers that rattles windows at one hundred yards when you rev the engine. Now we’ve all heard those urban myths, the stories that people who drive red cars are more likely to get speeding tickets. As you all know, it’s because red cars are actually faster than any other car on the road and, until you get used to that hair-trigger gas pedal, you’re likely to be burning up the blacktop by accident. Well, it’s a good story but it does beg the question, “What do auto insurance agents think about people who buy these go-faster cars?” The answer you’ll get from every traffic cop with a radar gun in his or her hand, and every underwriter ready to set your rates, is that color is irrelevant. And, you’ll be pleased to know, there’s no evidence to prove either of them wrong. Accident statistics and court records don’t show any great risk of fender bending or offenses from those driving red vehicles of any shape or size. There’s a more simple cause and effect at work. People who drive at or near the speed limit tend to be safer and less likely to get a ticket than those who have heavy weights glued to their boots. Yet the myths persist. Some colors like blue are “cool” and “safe”, others like red are extravert, dynamic and sexy. Supposedly, people are attracted to buy the colors closest to their psychological type. Whether it’s true or not, the car insurance companies don’t factor color into their calculations. Check out the online questionnaire you have to fill in to get a quote. There’s no question about the color of your car and, unless the company asks you, there’s no way it would know. Make and model, yes. Color, no! So what’s the basis of the car insurance company’s calculations? Well, all companies employ these math geeks called actuaries who find every last detail of accidents endlessly fascinating. These guys get all fired up by the year of manufacture, the body type and size of engine. They profile the drivers involved by age and gender. And they all exchange their data to produce national statistics that help them predict whether you’re a good risk or not in that car (regardless of color). So buy whatever type of car works for you (and drive it safely to avoid tickets and accidents, and keep your rate low).

Never be afraid to ask for help

All the figures show the number of parents who don’t insure their children is rising. The reasons are all financial. No responsible parent wants to gamble with the health of their children. It’s not enough to refer to poverty as if only a small number are penalized and then move on. The way poverty is defined artificially limits the way in which the government reports the number who have fallen into the category. The reality is that rising medical costs are now making it difficult for even middle class families to pay for health insurance. Gordon and Mary are typical. They have two children. Gordon is self-employed as an electrical contractor. Work’s been pretty good with the boom in housing. Mary works as a legal secretary. They were comfortable until the housing bubble burst and contracting work dried up. He’s been doing odd jobs but their income has dropped to the point when there’s barely enough for the mortgage and food on the table. “The health insurancehealth insurance was the first thing we cut. That and selling the second car to pay off the credit cards.” Gordon was finding it hard to talk about it, so Mary took up the running. “We were embarrassed. Didn’t want to tell anyone we were having financial problems.” She looked round their home with pride. “We worked hard for all this. . . We tried to keep up appearances.” “When Doug, that’s our youngest got sick, we didn’t know what to do for the best. Mary wanted to go down to the Emergency Room at the first sign of trouble but, like I said, it wasn’t an emergency. Not at first.” “In the end, I asked at work. It was a real benefit to be working for an attorney who cared. I became an instant expert on the Balanced Budget Act of 1997. With two uninsured kids under 19, we qualified under the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). We were able to get both kids covered and Doug got the treatment he needed before things got too serious for him.” At least Mary had someone to ask. No matter what your situation, you should never let pride get in the way of your responsibility to your children. There are plenty of people and agencies around to ask. Remember, if you don’t ask for help, you never get any.

Australia is shocked by adverts (or not)

In any other situation, you would look at the title to this article and shake your head in disbelief. Australia is notoriously full of almost unshockable people. It is almost inconceivable that there could be any advert capable of causing anyone even the slightest lift of an eyebrow. Yet the regulators responsible for keeping Australia safe for the Australians has directed that one advert be removed from public display. The controversy over the decision has been impressive. Advocates of free speech have clashed with the more conservative elements in society that prefer not to have their eyes assaulted as they drive down the highways. And the reason for all this excitement? As a part of a perfectly legitimate campaign to persuade more men to seek treatment for erectile dysfunction (or even quietly to go on to the internet and buy viagra online) adverts have been asking the question, “Want longer lasting sex?” So here comes some more unexpected news. There is credible medical research that only 11% of Australian men who suffer from erectile dysfunction get any treatment. In this modern age, it cannot be that men have not heard of viagra nor how easy it is to buy it online. The reason has to embedded in the carefully cultivated image of male superiority that the men try to project. Their sense of shame is so completely overwhelming that any admission of a sexual problem is unthinkable. As a result, Australian women have yet another reason to suffer in silence. Anyway, whatever the reason for the reluctance to come forward, the adverts were designed to reassure the affected men that there was completely confidential help available. With the falling birth rate, Australia cannot replace its population unless there is increased immigration. As a policy, this is unpopular so the government has been trying to encourage more sexual activity. However, the advert is all too blatant for the poor folk responsible for setting standards in advertising. No-one can go around posting up provocative encouragement to have longer sexual sessions. With the adverts gone, all we can hope for now is that these shrinking violets (an Australian term of endearment for men with erectile dysfunction) will resort to the internet and buy the necessary viagra online from the privacy of their own homes.

What happens when the uninsured go to the emergency room?

The U.S. Census Bureau reports that an increasing number of people are now unable to afford medical insurance. Some 47 million people do not have medical insurance. When they begin to fall sick, there is nothing that can be done if money is short. When it comes to a choice between food on the table and treatment, most people decide to eat. They hope they will get better. When health does not improve, there is no improvement in the choice to be made. If treatment remains unaffordable, they have to wait until their sickness worsens to the point it can be considered an emergency. At this point, people decide to go to the emergency room at their local hospital. Federal law is very clear. Hospitals are under a positive legal obligation to treat everyone who walks in through the door. It does not matter whether the emergency is real, in the sense of a traffic accident inflicting unexpected injury, or to some extent manufactured, where the condition only becomes an emergency because of a deliberate delay. People must be given treatment. The difficulty is that most of the uninsured cannot afford to pay their bills. The hospitals can and do issue invoices for the treatment given and drugs supplied. This is also a part of the law. People have a responsibility to pay for their treatment. But hospitals are realistic about their chances of collecting. Continued pursuit for payment usually results in bankruptcy and the creditors only get a few cents in the dollar. So, hospitals make a rational decision. They spread all the unpaid bills among all those who can pay. In other words, whether you are paying out of your own pocket or you are relying on your own health insurance to pay for your treatment, a percentage of every hospital’s bill is a provision against bad debts from the uninsured. The irony is that everyone who is insured is also insuring all the uninsured for their emergency room visits. If you have been wondering why your own health insurance premiums have been going up so sharply of late, it’s because there is a wave of uninsured people going to the emergency rooms around the country. The health insurers are having to pay more and this additional cost gets passed on in the premiums. Is it going to get any better? No. It’s actually going to get worse. Ever more people are finding health insurance unaffordable. Even with sites like this which allow people to find the cheapest insurance around, many still find the premiums too much. That does not mean you should give up. Using this site will get you offers. Then it’s up to you to negotiate directly with the insurer or its agents to get the best actual premium for the cover. It’s not worth the risk of being uninsured. If at all possible, get some cover.

The Magic Pill sells like magic

One of the joys of watching the stock exchange is trying to guess what will happen and then trying to explain why you were wrong. It seems obvious that expensive drugs used for recreational purposes will be one of the first to feel the effects of the economic slowdown. You only have to look at the signs all around you. The banks are failing, the housing bubble has burst with foreclosures everywhere, and unemployment is rising. These are signs of a recession. So if people are going to struggle to keep a roof over the heads and put food on the table, nonessential drugs will be the first sacrifice. Except that the latest sales numbers out of Eli Lilly show that, in the sale of cialis, gross revenue jumped by 20% in the last quarter as against the same quarter last year. So, no matter what else may be going on in the world, there is one fundamental truth. Men will keep paying to treat problems of erectile dysfunction. Whatever else may be slowing down, the action is not slowing down in the bedroom. Perhaps the answer lies in male culture. There is still so much shame associated with erectile dysfunction. Men whose performance is affected feel, somehow, they are no longer “proper” men. If possible, they hide the problem. If hiding is unlikely to be effective, it comes down to two choices. Honestly discussing the problem with their partner helps to keep the relationship going. Sacrificing the relationship allows the man to save face without having to admit the failure. Why should the expensive branded cialis still be so popular? Well, there are two versions. The original version allows sexual activity for up to thirty-six hours. This gives almost complete flexibility allowing for sex whenever and wherever the urge comes. It’s as close to a natural response as you can get with only one pill. The other version is the once-daily tablet. This is a low dosage treatment that allows normal sexual responsiveness 24/7. The price for both versions is the same. It’s left to the man to decide which version is most convenient. When looking around to buy cialis, the standard approach is to go visit with your local healthcare provider, get a prescription and head down to your local drugstore. Except that traps you into buying this must-have drug at the prevailing retail price. Those of you who follow these things will know that the price for cialis has recently increased. Which is why you have come on to this site, where you can buy cialis at a rather less painful price without having to go get a prescription. This keeps your performance going without it straining your budget in a recession.

What to do about jet lag?

For some, flying is a routine. No matter how much security we have to go through to get on the plane, it’s still quicker than all the other land-based systems of transport. For others, it’s an adventure. We have saved our dollars and now we get our reward - a flight to the holiday destination we have been dreaming about for months. Except that, the further we fly, the worse the effects on our bodies. Some flights are nicked-named, the “red-eye” flights because of their timing. When they land, the people leaving the plane look and act like the cast out of Night of the Living Dead and shamble through the rest of the day like zombies. When the flights take us across different time zones, the effects can be just as devastating. One of the reasons for this is sleep (or the lack of it). Our bodies have natural circadian rhythms. We have a body clock that automatically tells us when to eat, to sleep and so on. If something disrupts that daily cycle, all the body’s processes are disrupted. A theory has recently taken hold that the body clock can be reset by using ambien. The idea is a simple one. If you are going to fly forward or back twelve hours, you will be expected to function at full alertness at a time your body clock tells you it’s night. Without intervention, your body’s temperature will drop slightly, your metabolism will slow and you will feel tired. But let’s say you take ambien on the plane. Now you sleep out of synch with your old time frame, but in the right frame for your destination. This is thought to be taking the first step to resetting the clock. In fact, there have been many confirmed stories in the media of sportsmen and women using ambien to get themselves to sleep so they match the local time zones. Some physicians can be persuaded to prescribe ambien for this purpose or you can just buy the ambienonline as you need it for your travel. However, although everyone agrees that it’s the most effective drug to combat insomnia generally, its use for this purpose is more controversial. Forcing the body to sleep is not the same as getting good quality sleep when your body is expecting it. Merely making you perform the activity of sleeping at the local time, is not resetting the clock that regulates your metabolism. Most informed physicians prefer people to live through the change and adjust naturally.

Those mice are helping out again

When it comes to sickness and disease, most of us have grown used to accepting what life brings us. We are all equally at risk. Viruses and bacteria don’t care. They attack the weak and the vulnerable or the just plain unlucky. But those born with a genetic or hereditary condition deserve our special sympathy. This is always particularly unfair. They are born with a limited number of years to live or with a permanent disability. They never have the chance of an “ordinary” life. So it is with muscular dystrophy, an unfortunate condition where muscles waste away, limiting mobility, affecting balance and eventually removing the ability to walk. People who have this condition tire rapidly, even when the activity level is actually very low. This rapid loss of energy has always been considered odd. We can all intuitively understand that people whose muscles are wasting away will get tired quickly, but not so tired after so little exercise. At first, scientists believed the cause of this fatigue to be overproduction of an enzyme called creatine kinase. However, the most recent research suggests an alternative - that there is a loss of an enzyme called neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS). This prompted the researchers to turn to an unlikely medication for treatment - viagra. As you know, viagra works by allowing the smooth muscles in arteries to dilate. The research team has bred lab mice with muscular dystrophy (scientists are really clever in a macabre kind of way). They examined the blood vessels before and, after light exercise, found the vessels had constricted, reducing the flow of oxygenated blood. But when these mice were given viagra, they were able to exercise without tiring. Preliminary testing in human volunteers shows that they too lack nNOS. The hope is that treatment with viagra as an already approved drug will allow people with muscular dystrophy to move around with getting so tired. However, the fact that this treatment works in mice is no guarantee that it will work in humans. The further difficulty is that if humans are able to exercise more, this may accelerate the breakdown in the muscle cell structure. There needs to be considerable testing before this treatment can be approved. But it does at least offer the chance that the lives of these people can be improved while we wait for gene splicing therapy to come along in the future. So thats an exciting reason to buy viagra online.

Make a mental note - the FDA is looking out for you

You don’t have to worry. The FDA does not think you are coming and need someone to guide you over the last few steps, or lost and need finding. Rather, they have your interests at heart. This may strike you as a slightly revolutionary idea. The FDA more usually seems to be looking out for the pharmaceutical manufacturers. But, in this instance, the FDA has had reports of a problem that could affect a few men and they felt it sufficiently serious to hurry out a new form of words to warn all men of this “new” risk. So, if you are one of the many who now buy viagra online, this warning might pass you by. Many of the online pharmacies are based outside the US and do not include FDA approved notes inside the packaging. This website for responsible online pharmacies brings you this warning. It’s all part of the service. The FDA has a general system in place to collect reports of adverse side effects to all drugs on its approved list. Under normal circumstances, men can and do take viagra without any problems. If there are side effects, they are barely noticeable and pass almost before you are aware of them. But, in a very small number of cases, men have been reporting a loss of memory. To make the condition sound medically impressive, it has been called Transient Global Amnesia (TGA). It could not easier to describe. Some men take the recommended dose of viagra. They appear to be perfectly normal and usually perform well in bed. However, after an hour or so, their short-term memories are affected. They begin to forget some, and then all, of what has happened over the last few hours. There does not appear to be any other physical problem. It is a simple memory wipe of a few hours of time. There is no clear understanding of how this might be caused nor why evidence of it should only now be surfacing. Viagra has been on the market for some ten years now. It has been used by millions of men around the world and there is no general word-of-mouth on amnesia. However, the FDA is sufficiently concerned that it has directed the manufacturer to include a warning. Quite what you are supposed to do if you find yourself forgetting stuff is not clear, but at least you should remember you were warned.

There was something important I had to tell you

I know it was important because I tied this knot. I always tie a knot when I need to remind myself to remember something. I know it has something to do with generic viagra but it’s not the obvious - that there is no difference between the generic and the branded viagra. They are bioequivalent. Everyone knows that. Even though the generic sometimes comes as a slightly different shade of blue (or not even blue at all), all pills for the treatment of erectile dysfunction supplied through reputable online pharmacies have the same effect. Wait, it’s starting to come back to me now. There is a difference. When you buy the branded tablet from your local drugstore, you are guaranteed to get the written set of directions approved by the FDA. When you buy through the internet, there may be instructions, but they need not contain all the information required by the FDA. Right. We’re on a roll now. Those wonderful scientist types working at the FDA have been getting all worried about Transient Global Amnesia (TGA). Now, here’s the thing. A tiny percentage of people who take viagra find they can’t remember everything that happens in the hours following. So you might take the tablet in the restaurant and wake up the next morning not being able to remember the drive home (or anything else for that matter). This could be dangerous to your health if you can’t remember what you said to your partner at a critical moment during the evening (or how your car came to have that bent fender). So, the next time you read all the small print in those helpful instructions (something you do all the time when you have nothing better to do), you’re going to see a new warning about TGA. It’s going to be very reassuring and the FDA will be right. Only a very small number of people who take viagra, whether branded or generic, will experience this forgetfulness. And quite what you’re supposed to remember to do when you find yourself forgetting is unclear. But, assuming you remember you forgot something, it’s called TGA and it’s nothing to worry about. Just remember to take a lower dosage tablet next time and all will be fine.

Stop that spam! Stamp it out!

Have you noticed that most of the spam that fills up your inboxes seems to be related to sexual performance? It starts with the simple and traditional, “Buy cheap viagra online.” and then slowly grows into the more extraordinary ways in which men may apparently impress a woman. Let’s not deny that size is an important factor, but even if it was possible to realize some of these promises on the part of the man, you really do have to question whether the women would swoon in anticipation or run screaming from the room. Anyway, no matter whether men ever do need something more than simple viagra (which is often available cheaply through sites like this), there’s no denying that spam is an annoying problem. It seems you can tweak the filter as often as you like, these clever marketers tweak right back with new ways to get the mail through. Worse, there’s so much of it flowing through the internet at any one time that it seriously slows the operation of the whole system. So governments have been passing laws to outlaw spam. Like that’s ever going to deter people. When almost all the major spam operations cross national boundaries, the laws of any one state are of little interest to the big businesses behind the use of email to sell product. But October 14 goes down as a brave gesture by the US authorities to do something about the problem. Armed with warrants and restraining orders, the Federal Trade Commission closed down a number of sites thought to be critical to the spam network. Unfortunately, it turned out that the spammers had a back-up plan and their operations were almost completely unaffected. It’s such a shame that the Commission decided to hold press conferences to sell the story of their success. In fact, all it did was to demonstrate the difficulty that every government has when trying to act against an international group with multiple servers in different countries. So the spam for cheap viagra continues to drop into inboxes around the world. Perhaps the governments should promote legitimate websites like this as a reliable source of viagra. That way, they will drive the spammers out of business.

Is weight loss ever easy?

Have you noticed how many people complain these days? Walk round a supermarket, any large store or go into a restaurant and the odds are you will find someone making a complaint. When you can’t help but overhear what is being said, these people tend to be playing the blame game. Something has gone wrong. It’s someone else’s fault. These others should do something to make the complainer feel better. Many times, of course, the complaints are genuine. The toaster went up in flames or the dress proved transparent when soaked in a rain storm. But, some of the time, the complainer is trying to pass responsibility and find someone to blame for their own failings. Take people trying to lose weight as an example. Some blame the lack support from their families, or say they have bad genes. Some lack the will power - they are too weak ever to carry through on a tough diet. Actually, if people do take responsibility for their diet and exercise, they usually lose weight. When good eating habits and physical exercise are combined with acomplia, clinical trials show people lose an average of 10% of their body weight and keep it off for at least a year. All that is required is that people treat weight loss like a broken leg. If you broke your leg, you would go to hospital and have the bones set. A plaster cast and painkillers would follow. Then after a little physical therapy, you would be walking normally again a month or so later. When you are aware of a problem, you take action and get it fixed. Anyone who wants to change their diet can do so. It’s easy to just eat less. Creating excuses for yourself is letting yourself off the hook. You lack the motivation but don’t want to admit it either to yourself or others (particularly those close to you). So instead of blaming others because things didn’t turn out the way you hoped, find good reasons for sticking to the diet, eating less and exercising more. For the fastest results, use acomplia and watch those pounds drop. It’s not going to be easy all the time. You’re going to be tempted from time to time. So long as it’s only a temporary relapse into bad habits, you will keep on losing weight. The more honest you are with yourself, the better. In fact, you should start to listen to yourself more. If you catch yourself inventing excuses for not following the diet, call yourself on it. If you find yourself rationalizing not going down to the gym, complain about your own laziness. Taking responsibility for reducing your own weight is the first and single most important step to take to slimness.

Family health insurance policies

When you’re young and in good health, you often live for the now. Some have the qualifications to find employment including health insurance in the compensation package, but most take what is available and let things drift until responsibilities come along. Then you start asking questions about what you want in the future. It starts with a partnership or marriage. It gets more urgent when children appear on the scene. If you found a job with a health insurance package, you can usually add your new partner or spouse to the plan. The first issue is whether that plan gives all the cover you need. Should there be gaps, you buy top-up cover. Then as the family grows, does the plan include children and any other dependents? Overnight, you become experts in the detail of the employer’s plan and carefully research what the private health insurance companies offer to give the additional cover. If your job has no health plan, but one of you had the wisdom to begin a private health policy, it is usually possible to upgrade to a family policy. Because you have track record with a company, this is less of a hassle than finding a completely new company for the family. If you’re starting with no health cover, you will find there are major differences in the premiums quoted. Through sites like this, you get instant quotes from multiple health insurance companies. By using two or three sites like this, you can rapidly accumulate a daunting array of information about different policies and quoted prices. This makes choosing the right cover a real challenge. The first step is take a cold-blooded look at the family finances. This is not a time for sentimentality or blind hope. You need hard figures on what you can afford to pay not just now, but in the foreseeable future. Remember your credit score drops if you start a policy and then find you cannot afford the premiums. The next step is to decide exactly who is to be included in the policy and what range of cover you want - just basic treatment options working up to long-term care insurance. Remember the larger the group and the wider the age range of the people to be included, the more the premium is likely to be. The more conditions, illnesses and injury possibilities you add, the more expensive the policy is likely to be. This drives you back to your financial calculations. The way to lower the premiums is to accept a higher deductible or copayments. But this needs a careful calculation. How much will you pay each year as self-insurance through the deductibles or expenses, against the saving in the annual premium. Weigh the benefits against foreseeable costs to make the right decision on which family health insurance policy to buy.

Dad is not as bright as I thought!

It’s easy to drift through life assuming everything will turn out right. Life has been good to everyone growing up over the last twenty years. There’s an expectation you can get whatever you want. So when your kids went through the admission process for your local college, they probably looked at the question about medical insurancemedical insurance and ticked the box that said your family plan continued cover. They never gave it a second thought. Melanie was such a student. “I remember asking my Dad and he said, so long as I was in school full-time and under 25, I was OK.” But it turned out Dad hadn’t read the small print. The policy had a term requiring the children to leave their parent’s policy when they graduated from high school. The company had a special policy for health insurance for college students. “So there I was trying out for the cheerleaders. Going for a big move, I slipped and fell awkwardly. Twisted my knee real bad. Not being like the girl in Heroes, that meant an ambulance to the emergency room. Called my Dad on the way. He came over only expecting health problems. Turns out, he had to pay for all the treatment on his credit card.” Melanie’s knee made a full recovery, but the family’s still feeling the pain of the unexpected debt. The moral of this story? Always check your existing policy. Most of the colleges and universities either have their own medical insurance policies or can point you in the right direction if your children are going to be without cover. The policies are basic healthcare, but get them through all the common health crises. When it comes to your children’s health, it’s not worth taking risks. If they fall sick and don’t have cover, they may not get treatment early enough. Always read your current policy carefully. Don’t be taken by surprise. Shop around for medical insurance on the internet. There are many economical policies aimed at the student market both for university and doctoral courses that can take some of the worry off your shoulders when they leave the nest and go live on campus.

Growing pains

Parents always say they never regret having their kids. It kind of goes with the territory. Love conquers all (eventually). But whilst you’re living through it all, it seems like you’re struggling from one crisis to the next. Like when they first learn to drive. Despite your better judgement, you let them drive the family car. Later you buy them something to run around in. But, when they’re starting off, you add them to your own auto insurance policy (and say prayers). Frank and Joan had two teenaged children who pestered them to drive the family car on special occasions. When that use grew to be expected, one car wasn’t enough so the first cheap, fixer-upper that never got fixed joined the family car on the driveway. They talked over the problem with their agent. “He was kinda laid back about it all,” Joan said with a smile. “He warned us that kids always have a run of accidents. Ours were no exception.” Frank leaned over to interrupt. “It was a bad two or three years. Everytime they went out, we never knew whether they would come back in one piece.” Joan was nodding in agreement. “We found ourselves turning to Christ more often. We had the Pastor bless the cars when the kids weren’t around and held prayer sessions on a regular basis. There were five small fender benders. Nothing too serious, and never a scratch on the kids.” “Praise the Lord!” Joan’s smile of relief said it all. “And every time the auto insurance came round for renewal we were expecting a hike. But the company held the line.” “It was all down to the agent who showed us how to get the discounts to keep everything smooth until they could get policies of their own at good premium rates.” Later, there were all the worries about dropping out of college, surprise pregnancies and marriages. But that’s another story. This one says find a good auto insurance agent who can help you through the teenage years. Other than that, trust in the Lord to see you through.

SOHO - not just “pretty” places in Manhattan and London

SOHO stands for Small Office, Home Office and it’s used to refer to people who work from home (sorry it’s a boring explanation). With the cost of business premises still high even though the housing market is in free fall, it’s natural to base start-ups in the spare room and the garage for storing inventory. With computers, people can easily work from home. Employers cut their expensive office overheads by having their full-time staff telecommute. The self-employed freelance or run e-commerce sites. Unfortunately, most people never think about home insurance. They have their home insurance policy but never read the small print. The bad news? The majority of policies either exclude or limit the cover for people who telecommute or operate a home business. Let’s deal with your boss offering you the chance to work from home. That’s great for you, saving all that money in gas or bus fares to travel to work. But if your boss gives you a computer, router and other office equipment, make sure the business insures it all. If not, you’re likely to find a burglary expensive. Your home insurance probably doesn’t cover any property belonging to someone outside the immediate family. So who’s going to pay for all the missing kit? The answer is to add an endorsement to your existing policy and to pass the additional cost on to your boss (you can sell this because your personal endorsement will be less than the business insurance cost). If it’s your own business, how much is all your equipment and inventory worth? Even if some of the value is covered under your home policy, there’s almost certainly no cover if you take any of it outside the home. Worse, there’s no liability cover so if anyone is injured whilst dealing with your business, you’ve just discovered the joys of self-insurance. You’ll be pleased to know there are options. If your own business is small scale, add an endorsement to your policy (sometimes called permitted incidental occupancies). But if the business is more substantial, there’s no substitute for a work at home business owners insurance policy. It’s more expensive but, because it offers strong liability cover against all claims for loss caused by the operation of your business, it pays for itself in the long run. You can use online quotes to find the best homeowners insurance for your needs.

Bad credit risk, bad driver?

This is a good year for drivers in California. Way back when in 1988, Proposition 103 received more than enough support from voters to pass. Basically, voters wanted car insurers to set rates based on the driver’s record and the number of miles driven. Three years ago, the Commissioner for Insurance introduced new rules prohibiting the use of ZIP codes as the primary factor for determining car insurance rates . These rules came into force July 14. This is one battle won for consumers’ rights. The war goes on. Zip codes remain a dominant factor in other states. Similarly, insurers also check out your credit score. Almost every company seems to think that people with low credit score make bad drivers. So what’s going on? Well, it’s all about how to define risk. All the factors go into the melting pot. How old you are, where you work, where you live, whether you own or rent your home, whether you own the car outright or have a car loan, what make and model of car, and so on. This personal information is included in your credit history. It gives the companies a snapshot of who you are. Is it fair to look at this information? Unfortunately, yes. Just as a loan company wants to know more about you before making the offer of a loan, car insurance companies want a better idea of whether you take care of your financial affairs before agreeing to pay out if you get in a traffic accident. The first step in setting the auto insurance rate is whether you qualify for any discounts. For example, most companies offer discounts if you can pay an annual premium rather than by monthly or half-yearly installments. Then comes the math work. There are statistical methods to determine the risk of you getting in an accident. If you’re a late payer who gets into trouble with liens and mortgages on your property, if you rent rather than own, you may not take as much care of your property as others. Add in lack of consistency in employment and multiple lines of credit getting close their the maximums, and you’re considered a higher risk driver. It may not feel fair. It probably isn’t completely fair. But that’s the way insurance credit scoring works. So, before you go online for your next car insurance quotes , check out your credit score and, if necessary, repair the score. The Fair Credit Reporting Act gives you the right to get free copies of your credit reports. Use that right and get your credit score into shape before getting quotes.

Stand up for your rights!

Do you want the best terms for your car loan? Of course you do. So stand up for your rights! The Federal Government doesn’t often cover itself in glory. It usually caves into the interests of Big Business. But, with the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), Capitol Hill actually did something useful for the consumer. There are three national credit data collection agencies - Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. The FCRA says they have to give you one free copy of your credit report every twelve months. So what’s in a credit report? Well, it’s basic information on where you live, how well you look after your debts, and whether you’ve been arrested or sued, or filed for bankruptcy. As a package, it’s on sale to banks, finance companies, employers, landlords, etc. To get a copy of your report, don’t approach the companies directly. Use annualcreditreport.com. It may be more useful to get one report from each of the three companies every four months. That way, you get free updates as the year goes by. If you find anything wrong, the FCRA gives you the right to have it corrected. Don’t forget. Any score less than 550 means you’re not going to get the best loan offers. Anything you can do to improve your score will save you dollars on your car loan.

How do you release some of the capital tied up in your home?

Although there are problems in the real estate market right now with resale prices falling, let’s focus on the general principles making the mortgage market work. The word you need is “equity”. This is the difference between what you owe on the home loan or other debts secured on the property, and the resale price. At present, you’re likely to have negative housing equity where you owe more than the property is worth. When the housing market recovers, the equity becomes positive and can be used in a number of ways. Some people think of positive equity as a windfall gain or additional capital. Locked up in the bricks, it’s of little use, but there are two different kinds of mortgage to release some of this value. The first is a home equity line of credit (HELOC). This is like a revolving credit account at the bank except that it’s secured on your home for a fixed term of years (usually not more than ten years). The lender assesses the resale value of your home and sets a limit - usually 75% or 80% of that value. The amount of the existing mortgage is subtracted and you can borrow the remaining amount up to the limit. It’s better to use the credit for big ticket items rather than for day-to-day expenses, but there are no limits on how you spend the money. The second option is a home equity loan or refinancing mortgage that pays off the existing mortgage and creates a replacement including a cash-out lump sum. Thus, unlike the HELOC where you only pay interest as you use the credit facility, you pay interest on the whole sum from the time you draw it down. Other people consider positive equity to be savings. Thus, you can either use the equity as collateral on loans for, say, the college tuition fees for your children, or you can produce a significant cash out sum with which you buy an annuity to produce income during your retirement. Thus, rather than the first view which can lead to you frittering away the value of your home, this gives you a solid basis for planning for your family’s future or your own retirement.

Whiter smile is easily obtainable

It’s sad but true — regardless of how well one takes care of his or her teeth, their appearance can never rival the white smiles portrayed in magazines. Fortunately for most people, a brighter, whiter smile is easily obtainable through numerous methods.

There are several different methods to achieve whiter teeth. Each option will be discussed in this article giving you an overview of the advantages and disadvantages.

Advanced bleaching treatments at dental offices last longer, and as such, can be very cost effective. The treatments range from $300 to $500, which is unfortunately very pricey. For people who can afford to visit the dentist, office treatments are more effective than over-the-counter methods.

Special mouthwashes and toothpastes aren’t as good as dental office treatments, but they do work. Be advised, though, that these treatments do not provide results immediately; whitening is a gradual process with toothpastes and mouthwashes. These products work better on lighter stains. These affordable products work very well for prevention of stains, and maintenance of a brighter smile already obtained.

Whitening strips are available at almost every drug and grocery outlet. These strips, costing as much as forty dollars per pack, vary in price in accordance with their quality. The cheaper strips work well when used often, whereas the expensive strips come close to providing the same efficacy as dental office treatments. The product must be applied carefully in order to avoid the strips leaving visible lines on the teeth. Tooth sensitivity can be heightened due to these whitening strips.

Brush-on whitening treatments are a great choice for people who are on a tight budget. A two week kit can cost as little as $3, making them a very cheap alternative. However, they can cause quite a mess and applying the gel evenly can be quite a challenge. Horrible morning breath can be caused by the ingredients in these products.

By avoiding certain food and drink products that are known to cause stains on teeth, you can keep the amount of whitening you need to a minimum. To the extent possible, the staining agents in tobacco, tea, and coffee should be avoided.

Numerous techniques are available for helping a person to regain his or her bright smile. No matter the choice of method you decide on, bear in mind that periodic dental visits plus improved dietary habits will help you keep a brighter, whiter smile for a lifetime.

What to do when COBRA runs out?

We’re into murky waters with questions about losing or switching employment. No-one wants to think about times of uncertainty, but if the economy continues its current problems, you have to plan round the jobs you have and can get. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which took effect in April, 2003, was designed to give you some protection for health insurance coverage when you are switching between jobs. To get HIPAA coverage, your most recent cover must have been through a health plan. In total, you must have had at least eighteen months of continuous coverage. There must be no entitlement under Medicaid or Medicare and you must have used up all your entitlement under COBRA. If you give notice under HIPAA within 63 days of losing your health plan coverage, you have the right to buy cover. The health insurers cannot refuse you a health policy based on your medical history or pre-existing condition, nor can they change you a higher premium to deter you. In fact, many states have laws to limit what health insurers can charge in this situation. Thus, you have a right to get health insurance for you and your family and the premiums may be controlled. This is something you should investigate. Here health insurance online quotes may be of great use for you. There are also privacy provisions to help keep your personal medical history confidential while making it available to the “right” people to give you health insurance and handle claims for treatment. HIPAA sets out national standards for handling health data to reduce the risks that your data is lost or stolen. There are also penalties if your data is sent to an unauthorized person. In theory, this is supposed to make doctors, healthcare providers and hospitals more accountable if something goes wrong. As a first step, you have the right to a copy of your health records. Most data processors make a handling charge for preparing the copy, but it is usually small. You also have the right to know who has seen your data and you can lay down limits on access. It’s in your interests to take an active interest. You should maintain the accuracy of your records and ensure that only authorized individuals are allowed to access it in appropriate circumstances.

Get the car you deserve with the best loan available

Read the newspapers, switch on the TV. It seems the world is going down hill faster than you can shout “Geronimo”. But no matter what the world is doing, everyone needs a new set of wheels. How else can you get where you have to go? Public transport never goes where you need, when you want. So new for old is the order of the day. Except most people don’t have any savings. That means some kind of finance. Credit cards usually charge too much. Where can you get a car loan? Well, sites like this are the answer to your problem. You can do your shopping online and get a loan lined up before you go out to the dealerships. This is a balancing act of how much you want against how much you can afford. If it means you have to go for a used car, that’s not a problem. Most finance companies will lend against a used vehicle these days. Except you don’t want to get turned down do you, or get offered one of those interest rates that means they don’t want to make the loan unless you’re really desperate. So before you make a loan application, check out your credit score. It’s absolutely free. If you find your score is down because of a mistake, get your score repaired before you start. That way, you’ll get offered the best finance deals from the start.

What’s lurking in the small print?

Don’t assume a lender has your best interests at heart. They are all in business to make a profit and that means you are just a piece of meat to them. So you have to take responsibility for protecting yourself as best you can. You’ve repaired your credit score and shopped around to get as many quotes as possible. Now read the small print for these car loans. Some of these cunning lenders will offer you a low starting rate, or even allow you an introductory period of one or two months free of instalments. Look past the good news and see how much the deal is going to cost you when the higher rates kick in later. None of these companies ever offers you something for nothing. The profit will be earned no matter what first impressions suggest. For that reason, you should seriously consider putting down a chunk of your own money as a deposit. Yes, I know that might be your emergency fund but, when you look at the cost of borrowing and the few cents interest you’ll earn on the cash on deposit, you’re probably better off borrowing less. The final act in this drama is with the car dealer. You’re negotiating a rebate on your current car, looking for a good package price. You know how much the other loans are going to cost. Now is the time to ask the dealer to beat the other offers.
