Family health insurance policies

When you’re young and in good health, you often live for the now. Some have the qualifications to find employment including health insurance in the compensation package, but most take what is available and let things drift until responsibilities come along. Then you start asking questions about what you want in the future. It starts with a partnership or marriage. It gets more urgent when children appear on the scene. If you found a job with a health insurance package, you can usually add your new partner or spouse to the plan. The first issue is whether that plan gives all the cover you need. Should there be gaps, you buy top-up cover. Then as the family grows, does the plan include children and any other dependents? Overnight, you become experts in the detail of the employer’s plan and carefully research what the private health insurance companies offer to give the additional cover. If your job has no health plan, but one of you had the wisdom to begin a private health policy, it is usually possible to upgrade to a family policy. Because you have track record with a company, this is less of a hassle than finding a completely new company for the family. If you’re starting with no health cover, you will find there are major differences in the premiums quoted. Through sites like this, you get instant quotes from multiple health insurance companies. By using two or three sites like this, you can rapidly accumulate a daunting array of information about different policies and quoted prices. This makes choosing the right cover a real challenge. The first step is take a cold-blooded look at the family finances. This is not a time for sentimentality or blind hope. You need hard figures on what you can afford to pay not just now, but in the foreseeable future. Remember your credit score drops if you start a policy and then find you cannot afford the premiums. The next step is to decide exactly who is to be included in the policy and what range of cover you want – just basic treatment options working up to long-term care insurance. Remember the larger the group and the wider the age range of the people to be included, the more the premium is likely to be. The more conditions, illnesses and injury possibilities you add, the more expensive the policy is likely to be. This drives you back to your financial calculations. The way to lower the premiums is to accept a higher deductible or copayments. But this needs a careful calculation. How much will you pay each year as self-insurance through the deductibles or expenses, against the saving in the annual premium. Weigh the benefits against foreseeable costs to make the right decision on which family health insurance policy to buy.

Dad is not as bright as I thought!

It’s easy to drift through life assuming everything will turn out right. Life has been good to everyone growing up over the last twenty years. There’s an expectation you can get whatever you want. So when your kids went through the admission process for your local college, they probably looked at the question about medical insurancemedical insurance and ticked the box that said your family plan continued cover. They never gave it a second thought. Melanie was such a student. “I remember asking my Dad and he said, so long as I was in school full-time and under 25, I was OK.” But it turned out Dad hadn’t read the small print. The policy had a term requiring the children to leave their parent’s policy when they graduated from high school. The company had a special policy for health insurance for college students. “So there I was trying out for the cheerleaders. Going for a big move, I slipped and fell awkwardly. Twisted my knee real bad. Not being like the girl in Heroes, that meant an ambulance to the emergency room. Called my Dad on the way. He came over only expecting health problems. Turns out, he had to pay for all the treatment on his credit card.” Melanie’s knee made a full recovery, but the family’s still feeling the pain of the unexpected debt. The moral of this story? Always check your existing policy. Most of the colleges and universities either have their own medical insurance policies or can point you in the right direction if your children are going to be without cover. The policies are basic healthcare, but get them through all the common health crises. When it comes to your children’s health, it’s not worth taking risks. If they fall sick and don’t have cover, they may not get treatment early enough. Always read your current policy carefully. Don’t be taken by surprise. Shop around for medical insurance on the internet. There are many economical policies aimed at the student market both for university and doctoral courses that can take some of the worry off your shoulders when they leave the nest and go live on campus.

Growing pains

Parents always say they never regret having their kids. It kind of goes with the territory. Love conquers all (eventually). But whilst you’re living through it all, it seems like you’re struggling from one crisis to the next. Like when they first learn to drive. Despite your better judgement, you let them drive the family car. Later you buy them something to run around in. But, when they’re starting off, you add them to your own auto insurance policy (and say prayers). Frank and Joan had two teenaged children who pestered them to drive the family car on special occasions. When that use grew to be expected, one car wasn’t enough so the first cheap, fixer-upper that never got fixed joined the family car on the driveway. They talked over the problem with their agent. “He was kinda laid back about it all,” Joan said with a smile. “He warned us that kids always have a run of accidents. Ours were no exception.” Frank leaned over to interrupt. “It was a bad two or three years. Everytime they went out, we never knew whether they would come back in one piece.” Joan was nodding in agreement. “We found ourselves turning to Christ more often. We had the Pastor bless the cars when the kids weren’t around and held prayer sessions on a regular basis. There were five small fender benders. Nothing too serious, and never a scratch on the kids.” “Praise the Lord!” Joan’s smile of relief said it all. “And every time the auto insurance came round for renewal we were expecting a hike. But the company held the line.” “It was all down to the agent who showed us how to get the discounts to keep everything smooth until they could get policies of their own at good premium rates.” Later, there were all the worries about dropping out of college, surprise pregnancies and marriages. But that’s another story. This one says find a good auto insurance agent who can help you through the teenage years. Other than that, trust in the Lord to see you through.

SOHO – not just “pretty” places in Manhattan and London

SOHO stands for Small Office, Home Office and it’s used to refer to people who work from home (sorry it’s a boring explanation). With the cost of business premises still high even though the housing market is in free fall, it’s natural to base start-ups in the spare room and the garage for storing inventory. With computers, people can easily work from home. Employers cut their expensive office overheads by having their full-time staff telecommute. The self-employed freelance or run e-commerce sites. Unfortunately, most people never think about home insurance. They have their home insurance policy but never read the small print. The bad news? The majority of policies either exclude or limit the cover for people who telecommute or operate a home business. Let’s deal with your boss offering you the chance to work from home. That’s great for you, saving all that money in gas or bus fares to travel to work. But if your boss gives you a computer, router and other office equipment, make sure the business insures it all. If not, you’re likely to find a burglary expensive. Your home insurance probably doesn’t cover any property belonging to someone outside the immediate family. So who’s going to pay for all the missing kit? The answer is to add an endorsement to your existing policy and to pass the additional cost on to your boss (you can sell this because your personal endorsement will be less than the business insurance cost). If it’s your own business, how much is all your equipment and inventory worth? Even if some of the value is covered under your home policy, there’s almost certainly no cover if you take any of it outside the home. Worse, there’s no liability cover so if anyone is injured whilst dealing with your business, you’ve just discovered the joys of self-insurance. You’ll be pleased to know there are options. If your own business is small scale, add an endorsement to your policy (sometimes called permitted incidental occupancies). But if the business is more substantial, there’s no substitute for a work at home business owners insurance policy. It’s more expensive but, because it offers strong liability cover against all claims for loss caused by the operation of your business, it pays for itself in the long run. You can use online quotes to find the best homeowners insurance for your needs.
